“Dumb as a wave,” La Jolla

Here where I saw
your face first
I see you now
a year later, three
months after we ended.
In the Vons, at Starbucks,
there is no relief
from youe eyes at Christmas.
The Pacific rolls in,
waves 13 seconds part
says the surf report,
washing the same
sands that you walked,
the same cliffs worn
imperceptibly down,
and a man, one year
older, writing to you,
dumb as a wave.
