Vilnius, Lithuania

Vilnius 013

Napoleon called it the Jerusalem of the North and it was the EU Capital of Culture in 2009. If you have not seen it, get going. Vilnius is cool, cultured, and laid back. At 550,000 inhabitants, it is bigger than it seems, with good food and honest, down-to-earth people, including a preternatural number of super-models. Just enough English is spoken for us outlanders to get by (Russian is the only other widely spoken tongue there) and you can stay in a monastery where you sleep in a monk’s cell and eat in the refectory.
