Pont d’Avignon, in the snow

DSCN1370enh

“Les beaux messieurs font comme ça
Et puis encore comme ça.

Sur le pont d’Avignon
L’on y danse, l’on y danse
Sur le pont d’Avignon
L’on y danse tous en rond.

Les belles dames font comme ça
Et puis encore comme ça.

Sur le pont d’Avignon
L’on y danse, l’on y danse
Sur le pont d’Avignon
L’on y danse tous en rond.”

And so on, you get the idea: a rather insipid song. Actually the song was originally about dancing UNDER the bridge, built in the 15th century to lead out to Ile de la Barthelasse, where the locals went to escape the papacy. Pont St. Bénézet, as it is officially known, only lasted ~100 years before it was swept away in a flood of the Rhone River.

Here you see it in a rare Provencal snow storm.
