Dragon Boat Races, Hong Kong, 2001

It was threatening to rain, the air had that buzzy pre-storm electricity in it, and the locals were scampering for the subway. But I had never seen the real dragon boats race, and I had waited a long time. It’s only rain, I figured. The sky turned black in the way that we Midwesterners read as “tornado.” Still I stayed. When the boats came, they moved very swiftly, surprising me. I had expected something slower. These were like very large sculls, with crews dressed in these electric colors. When I took this picture I had no idea the contrast would be so striking. No Photoshop used here.
