Kyoto Imperial Palace Park, Japan

You’re walking down the street, you’re not thinking about walking, you’re thinking it’s great to be in Kyoto, a place you always wanted to spend time, and now these big green trees — kind of rare — have sprouted in your path like sudden fountains of cool, and the shortcut you took from the temples of Nijo-Jo over to Seiryucho looks like a stroke of unexpected good luck, and to fill your lungs with good green air you look left:

He has just risen from his wheelchair.
He wheels himself here, alone.
Each step he takes is searching,
tentative as a first kiss.
A fear of his falling
freezes you in mid-stride,
but he won’t go far
and every step is worth it.
