Hemingway meets Peter Max

A friend of mine, two decades ago, said that she went to Peter B. Lewis’ condo — and he had Peter Max paintings in his bathroom, two of them, one in front of each commode. She thought that was faux kitsch, but I liked his chutzpah, and since Lewis — founder of Progressive Insurance — is himself a Hemingway kind of character, right out of The Sun Also Rises, that story gave me this idea. Young Hemingway done to the Max. Lewis also a patron of great art and great buildings, like the ones by Frank Gehry that he has gotten built here and there. When I was a young reporter, my magazine published a controversial portrait of him, detailing how the entrepreneur sailed about on his yacht and smoked marijuana occasionally. That caught my eye. Young Jay Gatz, only with taste.
