The Islam Question

Been reading a lot about Islam lately,
about Afghanistan, about “corruption”
and culture and “proxies” and Causes.

When I was out here in the desert,
it didn’t seem very complicated.
When we drove over the land of a man
living in a canyon with three wives
and 75 goats, he ordered us to stop.
We drank tea, traded gossip for an hour,
gave him two kilos of rice, and went
on our way. He lived in a cave.

That was a decade ago, but somehow
I think it’s still about the Basics:
survival, respect, trust. Coming from
a place with no room for error.
